35 & 36 July: The Fall of Sheikh Hasina
On August 4, large-scale clashes broke out between ruling party armed groups and the general body of students and citizens. The next day, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement announced a “March to Dhaka.” In the meantime, Sheikh Hasina invited the movement’s coordinators, including Nahid Islam, to sit for talks. They refused.
Defying the government’s indefinite curfew, from the morning of August 5, thousands of people poured into the streets. From both ends of Dhaka, countless men, women, and young people began marching toward Ganabhaban. Faced with this tidal wave of people, Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to India.
